Stephen was born in London and educated at Harrow
School, before gaining a degree in Modern History
at Christ Church, Oxford. He has been a journalist and
broadcaster since 1984. For most of that time he has
been based in Bristol, where he was on the BBC staff
for 12 years, working in both radio and television. He
has also been in demand to provide material for Sky
TV, CNN and Global Sport in New Zealand.
Stephen's first cricket broadcast was for Essex Radio in
1984, before he went on to cover Somerset for DevonAir
Radio. He obtained the only broadcast interview with Vivian
Richards after the Antiguan made his highest first-class score
of 322 against Warwickshire at Taunton in 1985, and has
also covered Gloucestershire for the BBC, providing reports
and commentary on major matches, including successive
Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy finals at Lord's. He was at
the microphone for Cricinfo in Karachi in 2000 when England
completed their famous Test win in the dark, and also covered
the 2001 Ashes series. He provided commentary for Radio
Pakistan during the tour of England in 2001.
Stephen was Radio Bristol's News Editor, and he produced
the regional television programme Points West on BBC1. Before
that he co-presented the breakfast programme for GWR Radio
in Wiltshire, and the Saturday Sports Programme for DevonAir
Radio. He is a skilled reporter and producer, and still reads
the news regularly. He has interviewed numerous political
figures, including Nigel Lawson, Tony Benn and Chris Patten,
and other famous cricketers such as Ian Botham, David Gower
and Jack Russell.
Apart from cricket, Stephen has covered a wide variety of
sports including rugby, football, tennis, golf, speedway,
snooker and darts. Other activities include walking, skiing,
squash and sailing. Stephen is a member of the MCC and the
Cricket Writers' Club.
After three years as managing editor of Cricinfo, he left in
2003 to set up Sportsline Media Limited with Ralph Dellor.
He has recently combined with Ralph Dellor to compile A Little Book of
Cricket - an A to Z, Winning the Ashes, A Little Book of Cricket
Legends and A History of Cricket.
