Stephen was born in London and educated at Harrow School, before gaining a degree in Modern History at Christ Church, Oxford. He has been a journalist and broadcaster since 1984. For most of that time he has been based in Bristol, where he was on the BBC staff for 12 years, working in both radio and television. He has also been in demand to provide material for Sky TV, CNN and Global Sport in New Zealand.

Stephen's first cricket broadcast was for Essex Radio in 1984, before he went on to cover Somerset for DevonAir Radio. He obtained the only broadcast interview with Vivian Richards after the Antiguan made his highest first-class score of 322 against Warwickshire at Taunton in 1985, and has also covered Gloucestershire for the BBC, providing reports and commentary on major matches, including successive Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy finals at Lord's. He was at the microphone for Cricinfo in Karachi in 2000 when England completed their famous Test win in the dark, and also covered the 2001 Ashes series. He provided commentary for Radio Pakistan during the tour of England in 2001.

Stephen was Radio Bristol's News Editor, and he produced the regional television programme Points West on BBC1. Before that he co-presented the breakfast programme for GWR Radio in Wiltshire, and the Saturday Sports Programme for DevonAir Radio. He is a skilled reporter and producer, and still reads the news regularly. He has interviewed numerous political figures, including Nigel Lawson, Tony Benn and Chris Patten, and other famous cricketers such as Ian Botham, David Gower and Jack Russell.

Apart from cricket, Stephen has covered a wide variety of sports including rugby, football, tennis, golf, speedway, snooker and darts. Other activities include walking, skiing, squash and sailing. Stephen is a member of the MCC and the Cricket Writers' Club.

After three years as managing editor of Cricinfo, he left in 2003 to set up Sportsline Media Limited with Ralph Dellor.

He has recently combined with Ralph Dellor to compile A Little Book of Cricket - an A to Z, Winning the Ashes, A Little Book of Cricket Legends and A History of Cricket.
